I love this time of the year, not just because my birthday is coming up soon, but the cozy feeling this season brings. the weather is cooler, the leaves are changing color, and I can pull out all my favorite sweaters. Its a great time of year to make a cup of coco and watch a spooky show, like Hocus Pocus or Practical Magic and the best option a Harry Potter marathon. with the season changing its also time to put out some fresh décor! Most of my decorations are just for fall so I can have them through thanks giving, as we get closer to Halloween I'll pull out some more spookier items.!
DIY Concrete Pumpkins
These were not the quickest to make but I think they were cost effective compared to buying resin, terracotta or even real pumpkins form the farm.
Items needed:
- extra fine concrete
- bucket
- water
- gloves
- material, like panty hose or old leggings
- string
- Paint for the pumpkins and stems
- polymer clay
- super glue
The prep work is key, have everything ready before you mix the concrete is so important. I didn't sacrifice a bucket to this project because the concrete set so fast! I also learned that it's best to mix a little bit at a time!
- gather all the materials.
- cut your fabric, I used panty hose and some old leggings, you want to make tubes with them, tie off one end.
- mix your concrete
- put you concrete mix into the tubes of fabric tie off the top.
- Shape the pumpkin with tieing strings across the pumpkin.
- Repeat and allow the concrete to set
- for stems I used nameable polymer clay, this is pretty simple you just want to creat some stumpy stems, and some unique curly stems.
- for the curly stems I would make strips of clay and twist them till I got a nice shape.
- bake your clay
- paint the stems to look realistic, I used brown and dark green.
- paint your concrete pumpkins! To make them realistic, layering a base color and then a paint wash of brown to make them look like they just came from the garden! Let the paint dry
- attach you stems, I used super glue.
- style your pumpkins to your hearts content!
While it's fun to shop around and find fun decor, it's also pretty gratifying to make things! And most of the time it ends up being cost effective! I got two bags of concrete for less then $10 and I was able to make 12 pumpkins. I have a family tradition to get pumpkins from a farm to carve and we usualy spend $50 on just four pumpkins, we don't even look at the hairloom ones because price per pound it's so expensive.
When it comes to fall or really anytime of the years it's important to focus on making memories, while the diy projects are tough it's even sweeter when they go right!
until next time see ya!
