Vintage Desk Restoration

Welcome or welcome back to Made by McLeod! I needed a space for household planning and a place to take some classes; I am working towards a bachelor's degree!

This desk is the perfect size and I appreciate the style. The pervious owner said she got it from a lady who told her that she used this in the 1930's. In about five years I can say this is an antique! there are a couple of issue with it, so I'm going to try to fix them!

The process

The previous owner said they had stripped the finish and applied only one layer of stain without a topcoat, which made sanding it easier. I removed all the brass hardware, and I considered removing the patina, but on Instagram, they voted for me to keep the patina! The inner compartment of the desk was warped, so I soaked the wood in water and put a heavy box on it to flatten it over several days. Once the wood container was dry, I chose a stain, opting for coffee by Minwax. I love its depth, and I've incorporated it into a few areas around my house. I applied one coat and was happy with it. The next day, I used a matte topcoat finish, also from Minwax. Then the wood in the inner compartment needed to be addressed. There was some finish on it that I couldn't get off, so I decided to paint it with an acrylic paint I had, called Melted Chocolate. I think it looks alright. Then, for the panel that I had to flatten, I applied peel-and-stick wallpaper to it. Over on Instagram, they voted for me to go with blue and white!  Since this is a vanity, I wanted to make it functional as well, so I added this sweet gold mirror to the underside. This way, when I open it, it's ready to use!

The results

I'm so happy with how this turned out! I'm so grateful that I get to work here! I hope many creative projects emerge from the time I spend at this desk making plans. Until next time, see ya!
